Bape

A Bathing Ape, also known as BAPE, is a Japanese streetwear brand founded in 1993 by Tomoaki Nagao, better known as Nigo. Initially launched in Ura-Harajuku, Tokyo, the brand quickly gained popularity for its unique blend of hip-hop and Japanese street fashion influences. Nigo's early inspirations included iconic figures like Elvis Presley and The Beatles, as well as prominent hip-hop groups such as the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC. His design aesthetic incorporated these influences, creating a distinct style that resonated with a young generation. Initially starting with a small operation producing a limited number of T-shirts, BAPE gradually expanded its product line to encompass a wide range of men's, women's, and children's apparel and accessories. The brand's success led to the opening of numerous stores in Japan and internationally, extending to locations in Hong Kong, Taipei, and Beijing, among others. In 2011, BAPE was acquired by the Hong Kong fashion conglomerate I.T Group. Nigo, while initially remaining creative director, ultimately left the brand in 2013. The brand’s collaborations with other well-known brands, such as Disney, Pepsi, and Coca-Cola, further highlight its influence and cultural impact.
